The Royal Mint in the United Kingdom has unveiled a new design for the £1 coin.
King Charles III has approved the design which reflects his passion for the natural world and his work in conservation. The coins are expected to enter circulation from the end of 2023.
The generic bee design hopes to symbolise the 250+ species of bee that exist in Britain such as Bumblebees, Mason Bees, Mining Bees and more.
Much of Britain’s pollination comes from bee activity and it especially plays a pivotol role in pollinating fruiting trees. Recently, UK apitech company Agrisound have teamed up with Wyld Networks the satellite IoT connectivity company, on an Innovate UK funded project to track bees with audio sensors to map bee activity in English fruit orchards.
So now, when you pull out that one quid coin to tip your barista, or in future when you check down the back of the sofa, you will be able to smile at the joys of the bee.
“The Royal Mint has struck Britain’s coins for 1,100 years and this collection will proudly take its place amongst the designs of monarchs ranging from Alfred the Great to Elizabeth II.” Anne Jessopp, CEO of The Royal Mint
